A new National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) franchise in Boston has officially announced its name: BOS Nation FC.
This name, an anagram of “Bostonian,” was revealed recently, and the team will feature green as its primary color.
In addition to the new name, the team is launching a bold marketing initiative titled “Too Many Balls,” which playfully highlights the multitude of men’s professional sports teams in the Boston area.
The campaign features a number of notable athletes from the city, including the renowned Tom Brady and the celebrated David Ortiz.
BOS Nation is set to join the NWSL as its 15th member and is notably owned by an all-female group that includes Jennifer Epstein, Stephanie Connaughton, Ami Danoff, and Anna Palmer.
Connaughton expressed that the aim was to select a name that embodies strength, creativity, and pride.
The announcement also revealed that actress and director Elizabeth Banks, along with Olympic gold medalist Aly Raisman, has become part of the ownership team.
Further news regarding the team’s crest is expected to be shared soon.
Epstein shared her anticipation about the community’s involvement, stating, “Sports teams are fundamentally community assets. While we are the owners, if the launch of this team is successful, it will truly belong to the city.
We aspire for our team to be a cherished part of our fans’ lives.”
Boston has previously hosted an NWSL team, the Boston Breakers, which was one of the league’s founding teams that ceased operations in 2018.
Prior to the NWSL, the city also had teams in both the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) from 2001 to 2003 and Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) between 2009 and 2012.
BOS Nation FC will hold its home games at White Stadium in Franklin Park.
The team will collaborate with Boston Public Schools, sharing the venue with local high school athletic teams.
Both the municipal government and the NWSL ownership group are currently working together on facility renovations.
Epstein emphasized the importance of creating a lasting impact, stating, “With our team set to host around 20 home games annually, we wanted to ensure our presence is felt throughout the year.
This innovative stadium model allows us to achieve just that.”
She concluded by highlighting the positive influence the team aims to have on the local community.
