LOS ANGELES — Mark Vientos of the New York Mets recognized the strategy employed by the Los Angeles Dodgers when they chose to intentionally walk Francisco Lindor right before him in order to load the bases. Despite understanding the tactic, Vientos opted to take it as a slight against him.

His chance for retribution arrived in the second inning, where Vientos made a significant impact by hitting a grand slam. This pivotal moment contributed to the Mets securing a 7-3 victory, thereby leveling the National League Championship Series at one game apiece. Earlier in the game, Lindor had already set the tone by hitting a home run that ended the Dodgers’ lengthy 33-inning scoreless streak, prompting the Dodgers to gamble on Vientos instead.

“I see it as recognition for Francisco,” Vientos shared. “He’s a great player, and they prefer to challenge me after he launched a home run. I took it as motivation to step up and prove my worth.” With a 95.1 mph fastball served up by Dodgers right-hander Landon Knack, Vientos hit the grand slam on the ninth pitch he faced during that at-bat.

“I’m really proud of how he stayed focused and executed beautifully,” said Lindor, praising Vientos. This season, Vientos has adapted rapidly, establishing himself in the major leagues since May when he took over the third base position after Joey Wendle was designated for assignment. His ability to perform under pressure in the NLCS has made him appear as if he has vast postseason experience, despite being a rookie.

This marked Vientos’ first taste of playoff action—having played in just his ninth postseason match on Monday—and he’s already racked up 11 RBIs. This total brings him just one shy of the team record held by John Olerud (1999) and Curtis Granderson (2005). Additionally, he has achieved six multi-hit games in the postseason, tying for the Mets’ record with Olerud and Todd Zeile.

“Since he joined the team, he has been making remarkable contributions,” stated Mets’ starting pitcher Sean Manaea, who allowed three runs (two earned) over five innings, ultimately earning the win in Game 2. During the regular season, Vientos showcased his power by hitting 27 home runs and driving in 71 RBIs across 111 games, maintaining a batting average of .266 and an impressive OPS of .837.
