Father of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau joins Blue Jackets on the night before their home opener

The Columbus Blue Jackets have introduced what they refer to as a “Johnny skate” at the conclusion of their practices. This unique drill involves players taking a shot from one end of the rink aiming for the net at the other end. Successful attempts result in players completing a single lap, while failures necessitate three laps around the rink. This number connection relates to Johnny Gaudreau’s jersey number, which is 13.

On this occasion, however, the shooter intentionally missed, and the incident was well-received because it was Guy Gaudreau, Johnny’s father, taking part. Guy was invited to the Blue Jackets’ practice session in Columbus, coinciding with their home opener against the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers. Throughout practice, he skated alongside the players, offering encouragement by tapping his stick on the ice and sharing fist bumps as the session concluded.

“It’s clear that he has a passion for the game and truly loves hockey,” remarked Blue Jackets coach Dean Evason. “It was a pleasure to have him participate.” Guy Gaudreau is known for his past as a hockey coach at Hollydell Ice Arena and Gloucester Catholic High School in New Jersey. His sons, John and Matthew Gaudreau, tragically passed away on August 29, when a suspected drunk driver struck them while they were cycling on a rural road in South Jersey, just prior to their sister Katie’s wedding.

Blue Jackets forward Sean Kuraly shared, “Having Guy here is wonderful. It reminds us of the kind of things that John would do on and off the ice.” This wasn’t the first time Guy Gaudreau made an appearance on the ice this season; he was previously welcomed as a guest by the Philadelphia Flyers. The idea for Guy’s presence at practice originated from a similar gesture made by Flyers coach John Tortorella.

Tuesday night’s game is anticipated to be an emotional one for the Blue Jackets, reflecting a broader sentiment felt throughout the NHL. Tributes honoring the Gaudreau brothers have been visible across the hockey community for weeks. In Calgary, where Johnny began his NHL journey, goaltender Dustin Wolf has modified his mask to serve as a tribute, featuring the jersey numbers of both brothers, an image of Johnny in a Flames uniform, and even decorations of purple Gatorade and Skittles—two favorites of Johnny’s.

While initially hesitant to speak to the team on Monday, Guy Gaudreau eventually shared some heartfelt words with the players. His enthusiasm for being involved with Johnny’s team was evident when he inquired with Evason about the possibility of a morning skate on Tuesday. Upon confirmation that the Blue Jackets would indeed have a morning practice, Guy expressed his intention to attend.

“He simply wants to be a part of it all,” Evason noted, adding, “It’s wonderful to see.”
