MILWAUKEE — In response to deteriorating safety conditions, officials are shutting down two public parking areas in the Milwaukee region where individuals have been residing in makeshift accommodations such as tents, trailers, and vehicles.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, these environments have been increasingly unsafe over time. The department noted that emergency responders are experiencing a significant uptick in calls related to dangerous activities occurring within and around these parking lots.
The affected sites are designated park-and-ride facilities that are typically used by commuters to catch buses or carpool rides. The state plans to initiate the closures of two lots and a section of a third parking area, starting from October 21.
A local housing agency has successfully assisted over 80 individuals in securing permanent housing; however, the number of new arrivals seeking refuge in these lots continues to rise. Steven Shea, a member of the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors, mentioned the growing issue of affordability in the rental market, stating that many people find themselves unable to afford housing.
There have been incidents of violence, including assaults, gunfire, and drug-related overdoses reported at these locations. Recently, police addressed a brawl that was captured on video in late August.
“Park-and-ride lots are not a safe or appropriate environment for anyone to reside in,” remarked Joel Nilsestuen, Assistant Deputy Secretary.
