LOS ANGELES — Shohei Ohtani saw his remarkable streak of 36 successful stolen bases come to an end when he was caught stealing for the first time in nearly three months.
In the second inning of the NL Championship Series opener against the New York Mets, Ohtani attempted to steal second base but was tagged out by the Mets’ catcher, Francisco Alvarez, marking the final out of the inning for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Prior to this game, the last time Ohtani was caught stealing was on July 22 by San Francisco’s Patrick Bailey, who also got him at second base.
Earlier in the game, Ohtani made a significant impact with an RBI single against Mets pitcher Kodai Senga, helping the Dodgers secure a 3-0 advantage and driving Senga from the mound.
This season, Ohtani has had an outstanding performance, becoming the first player in MLB history to achieve a 50-50 season, which includes a batting average of .310, leading the National League with 54 home runs and 130 RBIs, while also stealing 59 bases out of 63 attempts.
It’s noteworthy that the two-way player did not take the mound this year as he was recovering from elbow surgery.
