MUMBAI, India — The Mumbai Indians have officially brought back renowned head coach Mahela Jayawardene for their 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

The Sri Lankan cricket icon, who previously served as the team’s coach from 2017 to 2022, will be taking over from South Africa’s Mark Boucher, who unfortunately led the Indians to an unflattering last-place finish in the recent tournament.

Akash Ambani, owner of the franchise, expressed enthusiasm about Jayawardene’s return on Sunday. “We are excited to welcome Mahela back as the head coach of Mumbai Indians,” he stated, emphasizing how Jayawardene’s leadership, expertise, and love for the game have consistently contributed to the team’s success.

During his earlier tenure, Jayawardene played a pivotal role in guiding the Mumbai Indians to three IPL championships in 2017, 2019, and 2020, thereby solidifying their reputation as the most successful team in the history of the IPL.

After stepping down as head coach in 2022, Jayawardene transitioned into a more expansive role within the organization, assuming the position of global head of performance. In this capacity, he oversaw coaching and scouting for the four teams owned by the Mumbai franchise across India, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States.

Reflecting on his journey with the Mumbai Indians, Jayawardene shared, “My time with the MI family has been one of growth and transformation. Back in 2017, the goal was to assemble a talented mix of players to showcase the best cricket possible, which we successfully achieved.

“Now, to return at this pivotal moment, focusing on future prospects, strengthening the love for MI, building upon the vision of the owners, and continuing to enhance the legacy of the Mumbai Indians is an exciting challenge that I am eager to embrace.”
