BARCELONA, Spain — Rising star Lamine Yamal has withdrawn from Spain’s national team after sustaining a muscle strain in his left leg.
As a result, he will be unavailable for Spain’s Nations League match against Serbia scheduled for Tuesday.
The Spanish football federation announced on Sunday that after helping his team secure a narrow 1-0 victory against Denmark, the 17-year-old forward underwent medical examinations that revealed a muscle strain. To prevent further damage, he is being sent back to his club, FC Barcelona.
Yamal played a vital role in Spain’s success during this year’s European Championship, showcasing his talent on the international stage.
In response to Yamal’s departure, Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, has called up Atletico Madrid’s Rodrigo Riquelme to join the squad.
Looking ahead, Barcelona’s next league match is set to take place at home against Sevilla on October 20.
