BOCA RATON, Fla. — In an exciting finish, Chandler Morris threw four touchdown passes, including two to teammate DT Sheffield in the waning moments, leading North Texas to a dramatic 41-37 win over Florida Atlantic on Saturday night.
North Texas, now boasting a record of 5-1 and 2-0 in the American Athletic Conference, found themselves down 37-27 late in the game. Morris engineered an impressive eight-play, 75-yard drive, concluding with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Sheffield, cutting the deficit to just three points. With 1:43 remaining in the game, Morris once again connected with Sheffield, this time for a 3-yard score following a five-play drive that pushed North Texas ahead. A crucial 34-yard run by Shane Porter set the stage for this eventual winning drive.
Morris had an impressive performance, completing 27 of 45 attempts for 336 yards while throwing one interception. Sheffield also had a standout game, gathering 11 receptions for a total of 126 yards.
Earlier in the contest, Morris threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Dalton Carnes, marking the first score of the game. He then added a 25-yard touchdown pass to Nick Rempert, giving North Texas a lead of 14-7 by the end of the first quarter.
On the other side, Florida Atlantic’s Cam Fancher matched Morris’s efforts with a strong performance of his own, throwing a 14-yard touchdown pass to Omari Hayes in the first quarter and then connecting for scoring passes of 28 yards to Wyatt Sullivan and 5 yards to Jabari Smith in the second quarter. Morgan Suarez contributed by adding two field goals, and by halftime, the Owls led 27-17. Heading into the final quarter, Florida Atlantic maintained a slim 34-27 advantage.
Fancher ended the game with 351 yards, completing 22 of his 30 passes with one interception. Meanwhile, CJ Campbell Jr. had a solid outing on the ground, carrying the ball 18 times for 89 yards and one touchdown.
