BALTIMORE — In an exciting matchup on Saturday, Jermaine Corbett opened the game with a remarkable 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, then later scored the go-ahead touchdown with just three minutes remaining, leading Merrimack to a thrilling 32-24 victory over Morgan State.
Merrimack jumped to an early 14-0 lead after Kendal Sims blocked a punt, which was then picked up by Ayden Pereira, who carried it in for a touchdown with 10:57 left in the second quarter. Lliam Davis further extended the lead to 17-0 by successfully converting a career-best 51-yard field goal.
Just before halftime, Davis struck again with a 41-yard field goal, bringing the score to 20-3. The first half ended with back-to-back sacks from defenders Nick Lenon and Jay Thompson, further adding pressure on Morgan State.
However, Morgan State fought back, narrowing the gap to 20-17 with a scoring play occurring just 34 seconds before the end of the third quarter. They then captured their first lead of the game with a short touchdown run at the 6:38 mark in the fourth quarter.
Corbett responded by finding the end zone again with 3:05 left in the game, although the conversion attempt on the extra point was unsuccessful, leaving the score at 29-24. Morgan State struggled offensively, going four plays without a first down deep in their territory. This led to Davis successfully kicking another field goal from 39 yards out, pushing Merrimack ahead by eight points with only 36 seconds on the clock.
For Merrimack (2-4), Pereira completed five of eight passes for a total of 65 yards and contributed an impressive 66 rushing yards on 11 carries. On the other side, Duce Taylor from Morgan State (3-4) performed well, completing 24 of 31 passes for 186 yards throughout the match.
