LARAMIE, Wyo. — In a thrilling game on Saturday, San Diego State surged past Wyoming with a final score of 27-24, highlighted by a crucial fourth-quarter touchdown pass from Danny O’Neil to Jordan Napier that tied the game. Gabriel Plascencia then kicked a decisive 28-yard field goal, securing the victory for the Aztecs.
O’Neil showcased his arm strength with a deep 53-yard completion to Napier, who later caught another pass in the end zone for the touchdown. Following this momentum shift, the Aztecs continued their push with a 41-yard connection to Nate Bennett, leading them deep into Wyoming territory. They ultimately opted for a field goal from Plascencia with 7:35 left on the clock. The San Diego State defense stepped up impressively, limiting the Cowboys to just 31 total yards for the remainder of the game.
In terms of individual performances, O’Neil completed 16 of his 27 attempts for 254 yards, tossing one touchdown but also throwing one interception. Meanwhile, Marquez Cooper contributed significantly on the ground, carrying the ball 25 times for a total of 87 yards and a rushing touchdown. The Aztecs’ other score came from Eric Butler, who returned an interception for a 43-yard touchdown.
On the other side, Wyoming’s quarterback Evan Svoboda completed 12 of 31 passes, accumulating 181 yards, which included a spectacular 70-yard flea flicker touchdown pass to Jaylen Sargent. However, he did face challenges, throwing two interceptions during the game. Interestingly, Svoboda also found the end zone himself, rushing for a 51-yard touchdown. Sam Scott added to Wyoming’s offensive effort with 94 rushing yards on 20 carries, along with a touchdown.
This game marked San Diego State’s first trip to Laramie since 2016, and with this victory, they have taken a slight edge in the long-standing series, leading 20-19 overall.
