GRAMBLING, La. — Jacorian Sewell and Stemarion Edwards each contributed to the scoring with long touchdown plays, while Noah Kiani secured victory for Alcorn State with a crucial field goal just seven seconds before the game ended, leading to a 17-10 triumph over Grambling State on Saturday.
The Braves, now sitting at 4-3 overall and 3-0 within the Southwestern Athletic Conference, executed a critical 11-play, 52-yard offensive drive to clinch their win. Throughout the match, they struggled with two turnovers and faced four consecutive punting situations. However, they regained possession with just 3:26 remaining on the clock,
A penalty almost jeopardized their field goal attempt with less than two minutes left. After earning a first down, the Braves moved closer to Kiani’s effective range. Quarterback Xzavier Vaught on a crucial scramble advanced the ball to the Grambling 10-yard line, setting the stage for Kiani’s decisive 27-yard kick, which sailed in as a low knuckleball.
Sewell was the first to score for Alcorn State, sprinting 63 yards for a touchdown to open the game’s account. Although Grambling responded with two field goals, Vaught later connected with Edwards for an impressive 73-yard touchdown pass, extending their lead.
Grambling’s sole touchdown came from Dedrick Talbert, who rushed 3 yards into the end zone during the final minute of the third quarter. A chance to capitalize on a 2-point conversion was thwarted with an incomplete pass. Reed Harradine then kicked his third field goal, a 4-yarder, to give the Tigers the lead.
Throughout the match, Sewell exhibited a strong performance with 102 rushing yards on 13 carries, while quarterback Vaught amassed 149 yards through the air. Myles Crawley led the Tigers’ offensive efforts with 149 passing yards, but it wasn’t enough to secure the win.
