GREENVILLE, S.C. — In an impressive display, Chase Artopoeus contributed significantly to the Chattanooga Mocs’ victory over Furman, leading the team to a decisive 41-10 win on Saturday. Artopoeus threw for one touchdown and ran for another, while Javin Whatley showcased his skills with a standout performance, amassing 168 receiving yards and one touchdown.
The Mocs dominated the game from the start, holding a 20-3 lead by halftime. They continued to pull away in the third quarter, scoring three touchdowns to seal the win. The Mocs capitalized on a total of five turnovers from Furman, notably including four interceptions. Marquise Freeman made a remarkable play, scoring a defensive touchdown on a quirky 47-yard interception return that caught everyone by surprise, as he intercepted a blocked pass.
One of the highlights of the game was Artopoeus connecting with Whatley on a long 71-yard touchdown pass, which extended the Mocs’ lead to 41-3 heading into the final quarter. Artopoeus completed 17 of 25 passes for 232 yards, while Reggie Davis added to the score by rushing for 93 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries, alongside Whatley’s 10 reception efforts.
On the other hand, Furman struggled throughout the game, managing only 12 first downs and accumulating a total of 233 yards. This matchup marked the third encounter between the two teams in under a year, with Furman having edged out Chattanooga previously to clinch the Southern Conference title last season and knocking them out of the FCS playoffs.
