NEWARK, Del. — In a thrilling encounter, Zach Marker showcased his skills by throwing for 279 yards and collecting three touchdown passes, guiding Delaware to a 44-21 victory over Maine on Saturday.

The Black Bears managed to narrow the gap to 23-21 with just 12 minutes remaining in the game when running back Tavion Banks plunged into the end zone from one yard out. However, the Blue Hens quickly countered on their next possession. Marker was instrumental in leading a meticulous 10-play, 74-yard drive that culminated in a 4-yard touchdown pass to Jake Thaw, elevating Delaware’s lead to 30-21.

Delaware’s defense then took charge, with Ty Davis intercepting Maine quarterback Carer Peevy on the ensuing drive, returning the pick 34 yards for another touchdown, thus stretching the lead further. Following that, KT Seay intercepted Peevy again, this time returning it 19 yards to the Black Bears’ 43-yard line. Quincy Watson capped off the eight-play drive with a rushing touchdown from three yards out, sealing the game with just 57 seconds remaining.

Maine, now at 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference, temporarily held the lead earlier in the game when Peevy connected with Montigo Moss for a 19-yard touchdown with 3:11 left before halftime, putting the score at 14-13 in favor of the Black Bears.

Delaware’s Phil Lutz also made an impactful contribution with five receptions totaling 133 yards and one touchdown. This victory marked Delaware’s first time entering the season at 5-0 in three years.

With this win, the Blue Hens have now extended their all-time series advantage over the Black Bears to 27 wins against 11 losses since their competition began in 1972.
