In a thrilling matchup on Saturday, Howard secured a close 21-14 victory over Sacred Heart, thanks to Ja’Shawn Scroggins who scored the decisive touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Scroggins had a robust performance, completing 153 passing yards and one interception, while also contributing 85 yards on the ground, capped off by a crucial 5-yard touchdown run with just six minutes left to play.
As the game drew to a close, Sacred Heart’s John Michalski attempted to secure a touchdown with a desperate throw to the end zone while under pressure. Unfortunately for the Pioneers (3-4), Elijah Ford’s incredible leap to catch the ball resulted in him being ruled out of bounds, leading to a turnover on downs after Michalski’s subsequent fourth-down pass fell incomplete.
The Pioneers initially grabbed the lead in the first half, with Xavier Leigh electrifying the crowd with a stunning 67-yard touchdown run early on. Jalen Madison followed up by adding a 2-yard touchdown just before halftime, pushing Sacred Heart ahead 14-7.
However, the Bison (3-3) responded in the second half when Kasey Hawthorne found the end zone with a 5-yard run, directly after a blocked punt, which helped even the score. Adding to the offensive effort, Jarett Hunter also contributed with a 3-yard touchdown score in the second quarter for Howard.
This exciting contest showcased both teams’ resilience and determination, leaving fans looking forward to the remainder of the season’s action.
