Joey Giorgi showcased his talents as he spearheaded Columbia’s formidable rushing offense, amassing 111 yards and scoring a touchdown during their 24-6 victory over Wagner on Saturday.
With 16 carries to his name, Giorgi averaged an impressive 6.9 yards per attempt. Columbia entered this nonconference contest leading the Ivy League in rushing, averaging 213.3 yards per game, and they maintained that dominance by finishing the matchup with 228 rushing yards. However, Wagner (3-4) outperformed Columbia (3-1) in total yardage, tallying 322 yards compared to the Lions’ 304.
Columbia quickly established control over the game, scoring the first three touchdowns to take a commanding 21-6 lead by halftime. Giorgi set the tone early with a dynamic 22-yard touchdown run. Following that, Chase Goodwin connected with Braden Dougherty for a 12-yard touchdown pass, and Griffin Johnson contributed with an 11-yard rushing touchdown.
Wagner managed to counter with a touchdown late in the game, courtesy of Jaylen Bonelli, who caught a 20-yard pass from quarterback Jake Cady.
Cady completed 25 of 39 passes for a total of 207 yards, including one touchdown and two interceptions, both of which were intercepted by Carter McFadden. Bonelli emerged as a key target in the passing game, racking up 114 yards on 11 receptions.
