SHARJAH, United Arab Emirates — New Zealand maintained their chances of qualifying for the semifinals by defeating Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the Women’s T20 World Cup on Saturday.
Georgia Plimmer was instrumental in the victory, scoring 53 runs, while Amelia Kerr contributed significantly with an unbeaten 34 runs and took two wickets. New Zealand successfully chased down the target, reaching 118-2 with 15 balls to spare after holding Sri Lanka to a modest total of 115-5.
Sri Lanka, the Asian champions, managed to exceed the 100-run mark for the first time in this tournament; however, their journey ended on a disappointing note with four consecutive losses in Group A.
With Australia leading the group and likely to secure one of the semifinal spots, the second position remains up for grabs. This outcome hinges on the match between India and Australia on Sunday, as well as New Zealand’s final group game against Pakistan on Monday.
In challenging heat conditions of 38 degrees, Sri Lanka’s captain Chamari Athapaththu scored 35 runs from 41 balls, featuring five boundaries. However, after she was dismissed by Kerr in the 14th over, Sri Lanka found it difficult to score freely in the closing overs.
New Zealand’s bowling attack saw both Amelia Kerr (2-13) and Leigh Kasperek (2-27) making significant contributions with their spin bowling.
Plimmer’s impressive knock marked her second T20 half-century, achieved off 44 deliveries. She and Suzie Bates (17) formed a solid opening partnership worth 49 runs. Plimmer’s innings ended when she was caught in the outfield, giving Athapaththu a consolation wicket.
Kerr’s innings was characterized by aggressive strokes, as she scored over a run a ball with three boundaries, while captain Sophie Devine finished off the match with the only six of the game.
In the later fixture, South Africa faced Bangladesh in Dubai.
