In Cedar City, Utah, Kayvon Britten put on an impressive performance by rushing for 191 yards and scoring three touchdowns as Tarleton State secured a hard-fought 38-37 overtime victory against Southern Utah on Saturday night. Despite surrendering a 21-point lead, Tarleton State managed to clinch the win in dramatic fashion.
Britten’s crucial 1-yard touchdown run in overtime set the stage for the victory. Southern Utah’s Bronson Barron countered with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Acord, but a missed extra point sealed the fate for the Thunderbirds. The game was a rollercoaster of emotions for both teams.
The game started with Tarleton State, ranked 14th in the latest coaches poll, taking a commanding 21-0 lead, courtesy of Britten’s two short touchdown runs and a 5-yard scoring run by Victor Gabalis in the second quarter. However, Southern Utah fought back with Barron connecting on a 27-yard touchdown pass to Shane Carr and later a 7-yard touchdown pass to Chase Merrell.
Southern Utah clawed their way back into contention with Targhee Lambson’s two crucial touchdown runs in the fourth quarter, giving them a 31-28 lead. A late 32-yard field goal by Adrian Guzman for Tarleton State tied the game, leading to an intense overtime period that ultimately favored the Texans.
Gabalis finished with 285 passing yards, connecting on 18 of 32 attempts, while Britten showcased his rushing prowess with 191 yards on 37 carries. On the opposing side, Barron accumulated 286 yards through the air with three touchdowns and two interceptions, while Lambson ran for 217 yards and two touchdowns on 38 carries. Gabe Nunez also contributed significantly with five catches for 106 yards.
