LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier had an impressive performance, throwing for 409 yards in the Tigers’ 42-10 victory over South Alabama. Nussmeier’s top target, Caden Durham, racked up 217 yards from scrimmage and scored two touchdowns. The duo played a crucial role in LSU’s offensive dominance, amassing a season-high 667 total yards.
Durham showcased his versatility by scoring on a 71-yard reception and an 8-yard run, while also contributing an 86-yard run to set up another touchdown. Nussmeier added two rushing touchdowns of his own and connected with Aaron Anderson for a 23-yard touchdown pass.
In addition to Nussmeier and Durham’s standout performances, Kyren Lacy recorded 107 receiving yards, highlighting LSU’s depth in offensive weapons. The Tigers displayed their offensive prowess with 11 different players catching at least one pass.
LSU’s defense also shined despite the absence of preseason All-American linebacker Harold Perkins, who suffered a season-ending knee injury. Linebackers Greg Penn and Whit Weeks stepped up, with Penn tallying 14 tackles and Weeks contributing nine in the victory.
Despite South Alabama managing to score early in the second quarter with a field goal and adding a touchdown in the third quarter, LSU’s strong start and commanding lead proved insurmountable for the Jaguars. South Alabama’s quarterback Gio Lopez threw for 171 yards and connected with Anthony Eager for a 27-yard touchdown.
Following the win, LSU is expected to maintain its ranking at No. 14 in the AP Top 25 despite No. 6 Ole Miss’s loss on the same day. Looking ahead, LSU will have a bye week before facing Ole Miss, while South Alabama will travel to Arkansas State for their next game. The Tigers demonstrated a significant improvement in their performance, showcasing explosive offense and solid defensive play in the victory.
