Norwegian authorities in Oslo have detained a German man with Cameroonian heritage on allegations of inciting crimes against humanity in Cameroon. This marks the first time Norway has engaged in legal proceedings for such offenses. The man, who is in his 50s and resides in Norway, has not been publicly identified. The National Criminal Investigation Service (KRIPOS) stated that he is believed to have played a significant role in the ongoing armed conflict in Cameroon.

Prosecutor Anette Berger noted that the investigation is still in its early stages, with various investigative measures yet to be undertaken. KRIPOS is seeking custody of the individual from the Oslo District Court due to concerns regarding the potential tampering with evidence.

Over the past seven years, the Anglophone crisis has wrought devastation in Cameroon’s Northwest and Southwest regions as armed separatists clash with government forces. The conflict arose following a government crackdown on peaceful protests in 2016, leading to the mobilization of rebel groups advocating for the independence of the Anglophone areas, referred to as Ambazonia.

The conflict between the Cameroonian military and rebel groups has resulted in the deaths of over 6,000 individuals and the displacement of more than 760,000, as reported by the International Crisis Group. All parties involved, including rebel factions and security forces, have faced allegations of carrying out abuses and crimes against civilians.
