Former French and Real Madrid center back, Raphael Varane, has announced his retirement from professional football. The 31-year-old, who boasts an impressive career including a World Cup victory and numerous club trophies, had signed with Serie A club Como in July. However, his time at the club was short-lived after sustaining a knee injury during his lone appearance in an Italian Cup match against Sampdoria last month.
In a heartfelt message posted on Instagram, Varane expressed pride and fulfillment in his decision to retire from the sport that he loves. He highlighted the many challenges he had overcome throughout his career, from his standout performances during France’s 2018 World Cup win to his contributions to Real Madrid’s success in the Champions League and La Liga. Varane also acknowledged his time at Manchester United, where he spent three seasons before moving to Como.
Starting his career at Lens, Varane reflected on his journey from modest beginnings to the pinnacle of professional football. Despite injuries limiting his playing time in recent years, the defender affirmed that he had no regrets and cherished every moment on the field. Varane had previously retired from the French national team following their defeat to Argentina in the 2022 World Cup final.
Although he is stepping away from playing, Varane revealed his intention to remain involved with Como in a different capacity. He expressed enthusiasm about sharing more details soon about his future role with the club. Como recently achieved a significant milestone by securing their first Serie A victory in over two decades under the guidance of coach Cesc Fabregas.
