Smith scores four touchdowns to lead Mercer to a 38-21 victory over The Citadel

Quarterback D.J. Smith led Mercer in a 38-21 victory over The Citadel, accounting for four touchdowns during the game. The turning point came late in the first half when Tyrell Coard scored from the 11-yard line after an impressive 75-yard drive, giving Mercer a 21-14 lead. The momentum continued as TJ Moore intercepted a pass from The Citadel’s Johnathan Bennett and returned it 39 yards for another touchdown, extending Mercer’s lead to 28-14.

Despite a touchdown by The Citadel’s Garrison Johnson in the third quarter, reducing the deficit to 28-21, Mercer quickly responded with another touchdown by D.J. Smith from the 20-yard line. Smith had a remarkable game, throwing for 253 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 76 yards and scoring two more touchdowns. Running back Dwayne McGee added 94 yards on 17 carries for Mercer.

The Citadel’s Johnathan Bennett threw for 336 yards and a touchdown but struggled, completing only 19 of 40 passes. The Bulldogs’ record fell to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the Southern Conference, while Mercer extended their undefeated season to 4-0, including a 2-0 conference record.
