Mets defeat Phillies 6-3, halting their NL East clinching hopes behind strong performances from Manaea and Alvarez

Sean Manaea earned his fourth consecutive victory as the New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 6-3 in a game that halted the Phillies from securing the NL East title. Brandon Nimmo’s tiebreaking single in the seventh inning contributed to the Mets’ win. Francisco Alvarez and Luisangel Acuña hit home runs in the second inning, giving the Mets an early lead. Alvarez later added a two-run double in the seventh inning. Edwin Díaz secured the win with a four-out save.

The Mets’ victory marked their 17th win in the last 22 games, maintaining a two-game lead over Atlanta for the final NL wild card spot. Despite playing without star shortstop Francisco Lindor, who is nursing a sore back, the team is focused on the crucial games ahead.

A crowd of 44,152 filled Citi Field for the game, only the fourth sellout this season. Nimmo expressed gratitude for the high energy and support from the fans throughout the game. Philadelphia, now 92-63, did not secure the NL East title but has guaranteed at least a wild card spot.

Pitcher Sean Manaea delivered a strong performance for the Mets, retiring 21 of 24 batters and allowing only three hits in over seven innings. The Phillies’ Ranger Suárez pitched five innings, allowing five hits and three walks.

Mets’ J.D. Martinez and Mark Vientos struggled in the game, with Martinez in a 0-for-31 slump and Vientos striking out a career-high five times. The Mets will face the Phillies again in the series finale on Sunday night, with Zack Wheeler starting for Philadelphia and Tylor Megill on the mound for the Mets.
