Olson’s homer helps Braves defeat Marlins 6-2, remaining 2 games behind Mets in wild card race

The Atlanta Braves emerged victorious with a 6-2 win over the Miami Marlins on Saturday, thanks in part to Matt Olson’s crucial two-run homer in the seventh inning. This victory keeps the Braves two games behind the New York Mets for the final National League wild card spot. Meanwhile, the New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 6-3, delaying the Phillies’ chance to secure the NL East title. Gio Urshela and Jorge Soler also contributed with home runs for the Braves, while Marcell Ozuna and Michael Harris II each had three hits in the game.

Atlanta’s starting pitcher, Max Fried, delivered a solid performance, allowing just one earned run over six innings. Fried earned his 10th win of the season, striking out six batters along the way. The Braves’ bullpen, featuring Pierce Johnson, Joe Jiménez, and Raisel Iglesias, pitched scoreless innings to secure the win.

In addition to his game-changing homer, Matt Olson also had an RBI single earlier in the game that helped put the Braves in the lead. However, the Marlins managed to tie the game in the sixth inning following a throwing error by Ozzie Albies, allowing Jonah Bride to score from second base.

The Marlins had an early lead with Derek Hill’s run-scoring triple in the first inning, but the Braves tied the game in the second inning with a leadoff homer from Jorge Soler off Marlins’ starter Adam Oller. Oller pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs and eight hits before being relieved.

In terms of injuries, Braves’ pitcher Reynaldo López is progressing in his rehabilitation from shoulder inflammation, while Marlins’ pitcher Braxton Garrett will undergo an MRI for discomfort in his elbow. The scheduled pitchers for the series finale are Braves’ Grant Holmes and Marlins’ Darren McCaughan.

Overall, the Braves’ win against the Marlins keeps them in the race for the NL wild card spot, while the Mets continue to hold on to their lead in the division.
