Booker Prize recipient Arundhati Roy is set to release her first memoir in September 2025, inspired by the loss of her mother. Scribner revealed the upcoming publication of “Mother Mary Comes to Me” on Friday. The Indian writer, renowned for her acclaimed novel “The God of Small Things,” shared that she began crafting the book following her mother’s passing in September 2022. Mary Roy, a notable educator whose life was depicted in “The God of Small Things,” was honored by her daughter in the novel and described by Roy as one of the most remarkable individuals she had ever known.
Arundhati Roy expressed in a statement on Friday, “I have been penning this book throughout my life. Perhaps a mother like mine deserved a writer like me as a daughter. Equally, perhaps a writer like me deserved a mother like her. More than just a daughter mourning her mother’s departure, I grieve her loss as a writer who has lost her most captivating subject.”
At 61 years old, Roy has authored works such as “The Ministry of Utmost Happiness” along with various nonfiction titles like “The Algebra of Infinite Justice,” “Walking with the Comrades,” and “The Doctor and the Saint.” Scribner described Roy’s memoir as an “extraordinary, at times unsettling, and surprisingly humorous” narrative that traces her life from childhood to the present, spanning from Kerala to Delhi.
