Blue Jays Shortstop Bo Bichette’s Season Cut Short by Broken Finger After Returning from Calf Injury

The Toronto Blue Jays have placed shortstop Bo Bichette on the injured list, ending his season prematurely due to a broken right middle finger. Bichette had just returned to play one game after an absence of more than eight weeks due to a calf injury. Despite his return on Tuesday night against Texas, where he went 2 for 5 with an RBI, he broke his finger on his right hand while taking groundballs before Wednesday’s game. X-rays confirmed the broken bone, leading to his placement on the 10-day IL.
Manager John Schneider expressed that Bichette continued to hit and finish his defensive work even after the injury occurred, showing his frustration but also a positive outlook on the situation. The team plans for Bichette to see a hand specialist, with expectations for him to have a normal offseason and be ready for spring training.
Bichette, a two-time All-Star who debuted in 2019, had a challenging season batting a career-low .225 with four home runs and 31 RBIs in 81 games. In response to Bichette’s absence, the Blue Jays called up outfielder Jonatan Clase from Triple-A. Clase, acquired in a trade with Seattle on July 26 in exchange for Yimi Garcia, was active for the team’s series finale against the Rangers.
