Golden Knights assess decisions following goalie Robin Lehner’s absence

Goalie Robin Lehner did not report to the Vegas Golden Knights, leading the team to consider their options regarding the player who has been sidelined for over two years due to a hip injury. Lehner underwent hip surgery in August 2022 and was placed on long-term injured reserve. The team has not provided substantial updates on Lehner’s status since then, and there were no expectations of his return to gameplay this season.
To maintain his status on LTIR, Lehner was required to undergo a medical evaluation. LTIR allows the Golden Knights to exclude him from their salary cap while ensuring he receives his salary. Lehner is currently in the last year of his contract, with a salary of $4.4 million. If he fails to report and his contract is terminated, his $5 million cap hit under LTIR would be removed.
Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon stated in a press conference on Thursday that Lehner remains unable to play, with ongoing unique circumstances being addressed by the NHL, NHLPA (Players Association), and the club. McCrimmon emphasized that the parties are collectively reviewing the situation to determine the next course of action and will share updates when available.
Vegas acquired Lehner in a trade in February 2020, leading to the departure of starting goalie and fan favorite Marc-Andre Fleury. Lehner and his wife, Donya, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy two years ago and reportedly owe creditors over $27 million.
