A former soccer player who once played for Arsenal in the Champions League has been charged with attempting to smuggle cannabis worth 600,000 pounds ($800,000) through a British airport. Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, currently with Scottish team Greenock Morton, was arrested at his residence near Glasgow early Wednesday and taken for questioning in Carlisle by police, as reported by the Press Association agency.

Emmanuel-Thomas, a 33-year-old forward, began his career at Arsenal, featuring in five matches, including a Champions League appearance against Shakhtar Donetsk in November 2010. He went on to represent various clubs such as Ipswich, Bristol City, Queens Park Rangers, Aberdeen, and PTT Rayong in Thailand.

The case unfolded after customs officials discovered around 60 kilograms (130 pounds) of cannabis in two suitcases at Stansted airport, arriving on a flight from Bangkok on Sept. 2, resulting in the arrest of two women. Emmanuel-Thomas is set to appear in court in Carlisle on Thursday, facing allegations of importing class B drugs, according to PA.

The National Crime Agency had previously cautioned travelers coming from Thailand, Canada, and the United States about the consequences of attempting to bring cannabis into the UK, stressing that culprits could potentially face up to 14 years in prison for drug trafficking.
