Washington Capitals forward T.J. Oshie is anticipated to be placed on long-term injured reserve for the upcoming NHL season due to ongoing issues with his back. The team confirmed this decision after Oshie’s medical examination prior to the start of training camp. While there is a possibility of his return, it is uncertain at this time.
In a statement, Oshie expressed his commitment to finding a lasting solution for his injury and mentioned undergoing treatments during the offseason. Despite focusing on his recovery, Oshie pledged to support his teammates and the organization in any way possible throughout this period.
Oshie, 37, had previously expressed his desire to keep playing if he could find a permanent fix for his back problems and avoid being in and out of the lineup. His playing time has been limited by injuries, including those affecting his back, resulting in him appearing in fewer games over the past seasons.
General manager Chris Patrick emphasized the team’s support for Oshie as he addresses his health challenges. The Capitals will receive salary cap relief by placing Oshie on LTIR, similar to how they handled center Nicklas Backstrom’s situation last season when he took a break due to a hip injury.
The team prepared for Oshie’s absence during the offseason, making roster changes that included acquiring winger Andrew Mangiapane from the Calgary Flames. This move was part of a broader effort to revamp the team following a disappointing early exit from the playoffs last season.
Originally from Everett, Washington, Oshie played his early NHL years with the St. Louis Blues before joining the Capitals in 2015. He is well-known for his standout performance in shootouts, notably during the 2014 Olympics where he scored critical goals for the U.S. team. Oshie also played a key role in Washington’s 2018 Stanley Cup victory.
The Capitals are prepared to move forward without Oshie on the ice, ensuring they have a roster that maintains salary cap compliance and necessary flexibility for any future adjustments.
