In Greece, on the island of Crete, a tragic incident took place in the Samaria Gorge when a sudden rainstorm caused a rockfall that resulted in the death of a Ukrainian hiker. The 33-year-old woman was struck in the leg by a large rock and sadly passed away due to blood loss. Fortunately, no one else was injured during the accident, which occurred while around 1,000 people were present in the 10-mile-long gorge.
State-run ERT television identified the victim and reported the unfortunate event. Following the incident, authorities have decided to close the gorge temporarily for safety reasons. A thorough inspection will be conducted to assess the risk of potential further rockfalls before it can reopen to the public.
