French soccer player, Wissam Ben Yedder, will remain free as he awaits trial on charges of sexual assault while intoxicated, according to one of his lawyers, Marie Roumiantseva. The 34-year-old striker, known for his success in the French league, was briefly taken into custody and then released after an incident in his car on the French Riviera. Ben Yedder was stopped by police after initially refusing to do so and was subsequently placed in a jail cell.
Following a lawsuit filed by a woman for sexual assault, Ben Yedder was summoned to appear in court on October 15 and put under strict judicial supervision. The Nice prosecutor’s office contested the decision to not detain the player in custody, but the Court of Appeal of Aix-en-Provence upheld the judicial supervision ruling.
During a recent hearing, Ben Yedder expressed readiness to attend rehab and acknowledged driving under the influence of alcohol, though he has denied the allegations of sexual assault. This is not the first legal issue Ben Yedder has faced, as last year he was accused of “rape, attempted rape, and sexual assault” in a separate incident in the south of France.
Formerly with Monaco, Ben Yedder has been clubless since the expiration of his contract at the end of the previous season.
