Nathan Clark, the father of Aiden Clark, an 11-year-old boy who tragically lost his life in a school bus accident involving a Haitian immigrant last year, appealed to politicians like Donald Trump to refrain from using his son’s name to drive the immigration debate. Speaking at a Springfield City Council hearing, Clark emphasized the pain caused by false claims made by Trump and others, including the demonization of Haitian immigrants. These claims, such as suggesting they eat pets, are hurtful and inaccurate.
Aiden Clark lost his life in August last year when a minivan driven by Hermanio Joseph crashed into the school bus Aiden was on, resulting in his death and multiple injuries to other students. Joseph was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and vehicular homicide by a Clark County jury, receiving a prison sentence of up to 13 1/2 years. Trump’s campaign and others have referenced Aiden’s tragic death in online posts, perpetuating false narratives about Haitian immigrants.
Recent false rumors about Haitian immigrants eating pets further fueled the debate on immigration, with Trump echoing these claims despite local officials and police refuting them for lack of evidence. While attempts were made to reach out to the Clark family for comment, there was no response, and messages seeking reactions were left with representatives of Trump, JD Vance, and Republican Senate candidate Bernie Moreno, all mentioned by Clark during his statement.
Many Haitians flee their country due to poverty and violence, seeking legal pathways to enter the U.S. and avoiding illegal crossings. President Joe Biden’s administration has introduced measures like Temporary Protected Status to provide an estimated 300,000 Haitians with work authorization and protection from deportation until at least February 2026, aiming to assist those in need during times of turmoil.
