The individual accused of assaulting a Ferguson police officer, Officer Travis Brown, during a protest has been indicted on multiple charges. The incident took place on the 10th anniversary of Michael Brown’s death in Ferguson, Missouri. The accused, 28-year-old Elijah Gantt from East St. Louis, Illinois, initially faced several charges, including assault and resisting arrest.
Following a grand jury indictment, Gantt now faces additional charges, including rioting and attempting to tamper with evidence. Officer Brown, who sustained critical injuries in the assault, has undergone multiple surgeries for brain swelling and fluid buildup and remains hospitalized. Despite battling pneumonia, his lungs are a primary concern for his recovery.
A GoFundMe page has raised over $160,000 to support Officer Brown’s medical expenses. The assault occurred during a protest in Ferguson, where demonstrators were marking the anniversary of Michael Brown’s death. Body camera footage showed Gantt charging at Officer Brown, knocking him to the ground.
Ferguson gained national attention as a focal point of the Black Lives Matter movement following Michael Brown’s fatal shooting by Officer Darren Wilson in 2014. Despite no grounds for prosecution found after three investigations, the incident sparked protests and led to reforms in policing and the judicial system in Ferguson following a Department of Justice investigation. Officer Travis Brown is not related to Michael Brown, and the community continues to grapple with the aftermath of these events.
