New York City Police Commissioner Edward Caban has announced his resignation on Thursday, just over a week after his phone was seized as part of a federal investigation. Caban was one of several high-ranking city officials whose electronic devices were seized by federal investigators last week, according to sources familiar with the situation speaking on condition of anonymity. The U.S. Attorney’s office in Manhattan is leading the investigation, although the specific focus of the inquiry remains undisclosed at this time. It is unclear whether the authorities are seeking information related to one specific case or multiple issues.
Additionally, federal authorities are looking into the activities of Caban’s twin brother, James Caban, who is involved in a nightclub security business, as per an individual familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the ongoing nature of the investigation. Edward Caban, 57, who comes from a Puerto Rican background, had been overseeing the nation’s largest police department for approximately 15 months. He made history as the first Latino to lead the 179-year-old NYPD.
In response to questions about Caban’s resignation, Mayor Adams refrained from commenting on his confidence in Caban, merely stating, “I have the utmost confidence in the New York City Police Department.”
