New sex crimes charges brought against Harvey Weinstein before New York retrial

Disgraced former movie producer Harvey Weinstein faces new sex crime charges as Manhattan prosecutors have confirmed his indictment during a hearing on Thursday. The specific details of the charges will remain sealed until Weinstein’s arraignment scheduled for September 18. Weinstein, 72, was not present at the hearing as he is currently recuperating from emergency heart surgery that took place earlier in the week at a hospital in Manhattan.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s office, under Alvin Bragg, informed the court that up to three additional allegations, dating back to the mid-2000s, were presented to a grand jury for review. After Weinstein’s 2020 conviction on charges of rape and sexual assault was overturned earlier this year, prosecutors aimed to bring him back to trial. It is undecided whether the new charges will be incorporated into the retrial or treated as a separate legal matter.

These developments in the case come following a decision by British prosecutors to drop charges of indecent assault against Weinstein. The former Hollywood mogul gained infamy during the #MeToo movement in 2017, after numerous women came forward with accusations against him. Weinstein, a co-founder of Miramax, has consistently claimed that any sexual encounters were consensual.

Weinstein is scheduled to appear in a Manhattan court on September 12 for a hearing related to the case, with the retrial tentatively set for November.
