Campbell Seeks to Drop “Soup” from Its Name, Following a Trend Seen in Other Companies

Campbell Soup Co. is considering changing its name to “The Campbell’s Co.” to better reflect its diverse range of products. The company, which has been in operation for 155 years and is best known for its canned soups, also owns brands like Prego sauce and Goldfish crackers. The potential name change is seen as a way to encompass the full breadth of the company’s portfolio today.

CEO Mark Clouse described the proposed name change as a “subtle yet important change” that aims to maintain the iconic Campbell name while acknowledging the company’s expanded product offerings. The plan to drop “soup” from the official name still needs shareholder approval, which is expected to be put to a vote in November.

Campbell Soup Co.’s roots can be traced back to 1869 when it began as a small operation in New Jersey. The name “Campbell Soup Co.” was later adopted in 1922. The move to rebrand without mentioning soup follows a trend seen in other food companies aiming to emphasize broader business interests.

Marketing professor Manoj Thomas from Cornell University’s SC Johnson College of Business noted that the name change for Campbell is unlikely to affect consumer perception negatively and may instead showcase the company’s drive for expansion and growth. Other food companies, such as Dunkin’, Krispy Kreme, Domino’s, Starbucks, and KFC, have also undergone similar rebranding efforts in the past to better reflect their evolving business strategies.
