Anticipating the Emmys: What to Watch for at Sunday’s Show

The upcoming 76th Primetime Emmy Awards are already being dubbed as the “Shogun” show, with the FX series breaking records and making history ahead of the ceremony. At the Creative Arts ceremony, the show secured 14 trophies, becoming the most successful series for a single season in Emmy history.
The main Emmy Awards show, set to take place on Sunday night in Los Angeles at the Peacock Theater and hosted by Dan and Eugene Levy, could see even more success for “Shogun,” with the potential for six additional wins, including best drama series and best actor and actress in a drama for Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai, respectively.
Hiroyuki Sanada, a revered Japanese actor, is favored to win the best actor category over well-known performers like Gary Oldman, Donald Glover, and Idris Elba, while Anna Sawai, less known in the U.S., is also a frontrunner for best actress.
“Shogun” made a strategic move from the limited series to the drama category, potentially outshining competitors like “The Crown,” which is seen as the main challenger. Despite stiff competition, “Shogun” is expected to dominate the awards.
In the comedy category, “The Bear” received 23 nominations and tied with “Succession” at a previous ceremony. The show’s second season was highly acclaimed, and repeat acting wins are expected for some of its cast members.
Several major stars, including Academy Award winners Jodie Foster, Meryl Streep, Robert Downey Jr., Gary Oldman, Brie Larson, and Jamie Lee Curtis, are also nominees at the Emmys, adding further excitement to the event.
The awards show will be hosted by the father-son duo of Eugene and Dan Levy, a change from the usual host Jimmy Kimmel. The Levys’ show “Schitt’s Creek” was a highlight of a previous Emmy Awards, and their hosting is eagerly anticipated.
Despite the dominance of streaming platforms and cable networks in recent years, broadcast networks like ABC and NBC still have notable contenders, with shows like “Abbott Elementary” and “Saturday Night Live” garnering nominations and wins in various categories.
