Jose Quintana achieved his 100th career win with an impressive performance, pitching 6 2/3 sharp innings as the New York Mets defeated the Cincinnati Reds 4-0 on Saturday. The Mets are currently on a winning streak of nine games, their longest in over six years. The team, tied with Atlanta for the final NL wild card, has not trailed in their last 72 innings, the longest streak in the majors this season.
A struggling Harrison Bader broke his slump with a home run in the sixth inning, sparking a four-run rally for the Mets. Pete Alonso and J.D. Martinez contributed with key hits during the inning. Despite Francisco Lindor ending his 16-game hitting streak, he extended his on-base streak to 35 games, the longest active run in the majors and a new Mets single-season record.
Quintana, with an 8-9 record, allowed only five hits and struck out six batters, becoming the 19th active pitcher to reach 100 wins. In his last three starts, he has maintained an impressive 0.50 ERA. On the Reds’ side, Jakob Junis, in his second start since joining the team, gave up just one hit over five innings.
The Mets showcased solid defense with their new double-play combination of Iglesias and Lindor turning impressive double plays in the game. Iglesias, who has taken over as the everyday second baseman, showcased his skills alongside Lindor in the infield.
In terms of injuries, the Reds could see the return of RHP Hunter Greene soon, while LHP Andrew Abbott continues to progress in hopes of rejoining the rotation. Mets’ McNeil will miss the remainder of the regular season due to a small fracture in his wrist, sustained from a hit-by-pitch.
The series between the Mets and Reds will conclude on Sunday, with RHP Luis Severino scheduled to pitch for the Mets, while the Reds’ starting pitcher was yet to be announced.
