San Diego’s Grant Sergent showcased his skills by throwing three touchdown passes in a game where the team secured its third pick-6 of the season, leading to a 26-7 victory over Central Washington on Saturday. This win places the Toreros at a 2-0 record in a non-Covid season, a feat they have not achieved since 2011.
At halftime, San Diego held a 12-7 lead with Sergent connecting with Kenyon Sims for a 28-yard touchdown and Cole Monach for a 39-yard score. The momentum continued in the third quarter when Jae’Von Reels intercepted a pass and returned it 33 yards for another touchdown. These plays added to the two interception returns the team had in their season opener against Cal Poly.
In the fourth quarter, Sergent threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Ja’seem Reed, cementing the team’s lead further. Sergent completed 19 of 31 passes for 231 yards, while Giovanni Iovino led the defensive effort with 13 tackles, limiting Central Washington to 265 yards.
Central Washington’s Kennedy McGill had a challenging game, going 13-of-27 for 92 yards passing, but managed to rush for 122 yards. Tyler Flanigan’s 1-yard run gave the FCS Wildcats a 7-6 lead late in the first quarter. Nonetheless, they were unable to maintain their advantage against San Diego’s strong performance.
