Marlins defeat Phillies 9-5 with strong performances from López and Norby, just missing a cycle by a triple

The Miami Marlins defeated the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies 9-5, ending the Phillies’ six-game winning streak. Otto López had a strong performance, just a triple away from hitting for the cycle. Connor Norby contributed with a home run and three RBIs, while Jonah Bride and Xavier Edwards also homered for the Marlins. Nick Fortes added two hits to the Marlins’ 14-hit offensive display, bouncing back after a heavy 16-2 loss to the Phillies the day before.

John McMillon earned the win for the Marlins with 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief pitching. On the Phillies’ side, starting pitcher Aaron Nola (12-7) struggled, giving up five runs and nine hits in 4 2/3 innings before being pulled from the game.

The Marlins extended their lead with a three-run seventh inning, aided by a homer from López and a crucial throwing error by Phillies shortstop Trea Turner. Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies hit a sacrifice fly in the third inning to notch his 93rd RBI of the season.

Marlins starter Darren McCaughan delivered a solid performance, allowing three runs over 4 2/3 innings. In the roster updates, the Phillies added catcher Aramis Garcia from Triple-A Lehigh Valley due to J.T. Realmuto’s knee contusion, and designated RHP Nick Nelson for assignment. The Marlins placed Max Meyer and Calvin Faucher on the injured list for shoulder issues, along with Derek Hill for a shoulder problem, while transferring Andrew Nardi to the 60-day injured list.

Philadelphia’s RHP Seth Johnson is set to make his major league debut in the series finale, while the Marlins are considering RHP Edward Cabrera after he missed his previous start due to migraine-like symptoms.
