McCaffrey’s status uncertain for 49ers’ first game vs. Jets

San Francisco’s star running back, Christian McCaffrey, is facing uncertainty regarding his availability for the season opener against the New York Jets due to a calf and Achilles injury. Despite McCaffrey expressing confidence in playing, he is officially listed as questionable. He suffered the injury early in training camp, missing four weeks of practice before returning this week in a limited capacity.
The 49ers will have key players Trent Williams and Brandon Aiyuk for the opener after both missed training camp practices due to contract disputes. Coach Kyle Shanahan mentioned the possibility of easing Aiyuk back into play, while hoping Williams can handle a full workload at left tackle throughout the game.
McCaffrey, who joined the 49ers in a trade from Carolina in 2022, has been instrumental in transforming the team’s offense. In 27 games, he has amassed impressive stats both rushing and receiving, leading the NFL in yards from scrimmage last season and being named AP Offensive Player of the Year.
Quarterback Brock Purdy expressed confidence in re-establishing chemistry with McCaffrey, Williams, and Aiyuk despite their limited practice time in the offseason, citing their experience playing together as a crucial factor.
Injury updates for the 49ers include DE Yetur Gross-Matos and LB Dee Winters being ruled out for the opener, with S Talanoa Hufanga doubtful as he returns from an ACL injury. Furthermore, G Aaron Banks is listed as questionable. San Francisco will need to make roster adjustments to activate Williams before the game.
