In Greenland, a court has decided to prolong the detention of well-known anti-whaling activist Paul Watson as Denmark reviews Japan’s extradition request. Watson’s custody has been extended until October 2nd. Greenland, under Denmark, lacks an extradition treaty with Japan, adding complexity to the situation. Paul Watson, formerly leading the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, gained fame for his maritime clashes with whaling vessels.
Watson’s apprehension on July 21st in Greenland’s capital was prompted by a warrant from Japan’s coast guard relating to a confrontation in 2010 with a Japanese whaling research vessel. Allegations include Watson allegedly directing the captain to throw explosives, impeding the crew’s official duties. If convicted, Paul Watson could potentially face a 15-year prison sentence.
