Mixto pulled off a surprising win in the $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar on Saturday, securing a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Classic later this year. Ridden by Kyle Frey, Mixto covered 1 1/4 miles in 2:02.10, crossing the finish line half a length ahead. Despite being the second-longest shot in the field at 22-1 odds, Mixto paid $46.40, $16.40, and $8.60 for the win.
Dr. Venkman, the race favorite at even-money odds, finished fourth. Trainer Doug O’Neill’s other entry, Katonah, came in seventh. Argentina-bred Full Serrano placed second, returning $9 and $7. Reincarnate, trained by Bob Baffert, finished third and paid $4.40 to show.
The Grade 1 race experienced the absence of its original favorite, Adare Manor, who was scratched due to muscle contractions following a gallop a few days earlier. This caused a reshuffling of expectations for the race.
