The California Golden Bears began their first ACC season with a 31-13 victory over UC Davis on Saturday, extending their winning streak against the Aggies to 12 games. This win also marked their 34th consecutive victory against Big-Sky Conference opponents. The Bears struggled at the beginning but found their momentum later in the game. UC Davis, led by new coach Tim Plough, put up a strong offensive performance, keeping the game competitive until the third quarter.
Quarterback Fernando Mendoza, starting over Chandler Rogers, threw for 158 yards and a touchdown, overcoming a challenging start at the fall camp. Running back Jadyn Ott had a slow start with only six carries and 11 yards in the first half but finished the game with 49 rushing yards and two touchdowns, although he was sidelined due to a late injury. Nohl Williams’ 80-yard kickoff return gave the Bears a crucial lead at halftime.
UC Davis managed to score 14 points through a fumble recovery and a rushing touchdown. The Bears’ defense played a key role in the victory, securing three interceptions for 25 yards. They made significant offseason improvements, including the addition of Teddye Buchanan, a transfer from UC Davis and All-Big Sky selection.
Looking ahead, UC Davis will face Texas A&M Commerce, while California is set to play against Auburn. The move to the ACC presents a new beginning for the Bears in a larger 17-team conference.
