In a tragic event in northwestern Pakistan, heavy monsoon rain led to a devastating mudslide hitting a house in a remote area, resulting in the deaths of 12 individuals, primarily children, a rescue official reported on Friday. The incident occurred overnight in Upper Dir near Afghanistan, with rescuers recovering the bodies of nine children, two women, and a man.
The official, Inayat Ali from the state-run emergency service, did not provide further details regarding the mudslide. Authorities have expressed concerns about the continuous heavy rainfall that began the previous month, warning of potential landslides and flash floods throughout Pakistan. Since July 1, over 275 individuals have lost their lives in rain-related events in different regions of the country.
Pakistan experiences its annual monsoon season from July to September, with scientists attributing the increased rainfall in recent years to climate change. In 2022, extreme rainfalls affected a significant portion of the country, claiming the lives of 1,739 people.
