A heartwarming scene unfolded at a new site of a nonprofit in New Orleans, where young campers enjoyed a lively indoor kickball game. The Youth Empowerment Project, located in New Orleans East, struggled to expand its programs due to financial constraints until the NBA Foundation stepped in to provide support. Established over the past four years, the NBA Foundation aims to empower Black youth by providing flexible funding to nonprofits across the country.

Research shows that funding specifically for Black individuals in philanthropy has been limited, but the NBA Foundation is working to change that narrative. By focusing on economic opportunities for Black youth aged 14-24, the foundation hopes to make a lasting impact on underserved communities. The NBA Foundation has allocated over $5 million to 18 local grantees in New Orleans, supporting programs that empower young people and provide them with essential skills for the future.

One of the success stories from the NBA Foundation’s support is the Youth Empowerment Project’s summer camp and work readiness program in New Orleans East. Thanks to a two-year commitment of $400,000, the program has been able to provide career preparedness classes to 31 participants. Among them is Ke’Daryl Sentmore, a 17-year-old resident who has benefited from internships and customer engagement lessons offered by the program.

The NBA Foundation’s approach to philanthropy has been commended for its trust-based model, allowing nonprofits to use funding in ways they see fit. Local organizations in New Orleans have praised the foundation for providing stability and space for innovation, essential in a city where philanthropic opportunities are limited.
