Romelu Lukaku leaves Chelsea for Napoli in a reported $33M transfer deal

Romelu Lukaku has officially completed his move to Napoli, marking the end of his disappointing second stint at Chelsea. The announcement was made by Napoli on social media, expressing Lukaku’s pride in joining the team. It was revealed that the Belgium striker signed a three-year contract with Napoli for a reported fee of 30 million euros ($33 million) plus 30% of any future transfer fee paid to Chelsea.

Napoli’s coach Antonio Conte stated that Lukaku is ready to play immediately and could potentially make his debut against Parma on Saturday. Lukaku and Conte previously achieved success together at Inter Milan, where Lukaku had his most productive seasons and became Belgium’s all-time leading goal scorer.

The 31-year-old Lukaku had been training separately from Chelsea’s main squad as the club looked to offload him after a lackluster performance since his return to Stamford Bridge for a record fee in 2021. Lukaku had successful loan spells at Inter and Roma before making his move to Napoli.

Lukaku’s transfer to Chelsea from Inter was orchestrated by Conte, who also departed the club at the same time. Conte recently returned to Italy to take charge of Napoli, following a tumultuous season for the team under three different coaches.

Although Napoli endured a rough start under Conte with a 3-0 loss in their first league match, they bounced back with a 3-0 victory in their following game. After a disappointing finish in the previous season, Napoli aims to reclaim their success, having won their last Serie A title during Diego Maradona’s tenure.

Lukaku, who had previous stints in the Premier League with Manchester United, Everton, and West Bromwich Albion, returns to Napoli after a brief spell at Chelsea, where his playing time was limited during his first tenure from 2011-2014.
