Angelina Jolie, known for her diverse roles as an actress, is now taking on the character of renowned soprano Maria Callas in a new film titled “Maria” directed by Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín. The movie is set to premiere during the Venice Film Festival. Larraín, who previously presented films featuring famous women like Jackie Kennedy and Princess Diana, considers this movie as the conclusion to his trilogy of historical female figures.

Maria Callas, born Maria Kalogeropoulos, was an iconic opera singer known for her exceptional voice and stage presence. Despite her success, Callas faced intense public scrutiny throughout her life, particularly regarding her behavior, weight, and romantic endeavors, which included a well-known relationship with Aristotle Onassis. She passed away at the age of 53 in Paris due to a heart attack.

To prepare for the role, Jolie underwent six months of training, including singing for the film that focuses on the final week of Maria Callas’s life in 1977. Jolie, a previous Oscar winner for her role in “Girl, Interrupted,” has been recognized for her acting skills with nominations in the past. The film “Maria” has been acquired by Netflix for distribution.

While Jolie attends the Venice Film Festival for her movie, her former husband Brad Pitt is expected to arrive at the festival later for the premiere of his film “Wolfs.” Despite being legally separated since 2019, Jolie and Pitt are still embroiled in disputes over various issues like custody arrangements, finances, and a winery in France.

“Maria” is one of the 21 films competing for awards at the Venice Film Festival, with the winners set to be announced on September 7.
