New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen expressed confidence in his team’s chemistry as they gear up for the 2024 season, following a disappointing 6-11 record in 2023. The team aims for improvement after challenges in the previous season, including injuries, a struggling offensive line, and internal disputes. Schoen and coach Brian Daboll have been working to address these issues, with changes made during the offseason leading up to the upcoming season opener against the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 8.
Schoen and Daboll have been focusing on finalizing the team roster and enhancing their performance. While Schoen did not specify a set number of wins needed for significant improvement, he emphasized the team’s determination to succeed. The general manager highlighted his confidence in quarterback Daniel Jones post-ACL surgery and the potential of the young cornerbacks despite some preseason setbacks.
Daboll indicated the team is close to making a decision on the starting cornerback opposite Deonte Banks, with rookie draft pick Dru Phillips adding depth to the position. The Giants have notably bolstered their offensive line with the addition of veteran free agents Jermaine Eluemunor, Greg Van Roten, and Jon Runyan Jr., who recently returned from a shoulder injury.
In preparation for the season, the Giants claimed safety Anthony Johnson off waivers from Green Bay, while releasing safety Gervarrius Owens and placing linebacker Dyontae Johnson on injured reserve. They also signed linebacker Curtis Bolton, previously with the Raiders, to strengthen their defensive lineup. Schoen highlighted the importance of teamwork and execution as key factors for the Giants’ success in the upcoming season.
