A 16-year-old Jamaican high school student named Jahmari Reid from Trelawny, Jamaica, was tragically killed in a shark attack while spearfishing alone. His body was discovered in waters north of the island, close to the town of Montego Bay. Fishermen found his body the day after he went missing, showing injuries consistent with a shark attack, as per a police report.
Shark attacks are uncommon occurrences, with 69 confirmed unprovoked attacks globally and 14 fatalities recorded last year, according to the International Shark Attack File based in Florida. Records from the file show that there have only been three unprovoked shark attacks in Jamaica since 1749. The file is managed by the Florida Museum of Natural History and the American Elasmobranch Society.
