State officials in Virginia have recently approved a new agreement with Norfolk Southern that aims to expand passenger and commuter rail services in certain regions of the state. The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority disclosed on Tuesday that the deal includes extending passenger rail services into the New River Valley area. This extension will allow for passenger trains to operate between Roanoke and Christiansburg along Norfolk Southern’s main rail line. The additional service is set to reach Norfolk Southern’s Cambria Yard station in Christiansburg, a site that was previously used as a passenger terminal until 1979.
Moreover, the state authority has acquired Norfolk Southern-owned rail lines in Northern Virginia. This acquisition is anticipated to support efforts to enhance commuter rail access between Prince William County and the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. Plans are in place to introduce evening and weekend train services to cater to the needs of commuters in these areas.
Governor Glenn Youngkin expressed enthusiasm about the benefits these developments will bring to residents, not only in southwestern and northern Virginia but also across the entire Commonwealth. The Rail Authority’s Executive Director, DJ Stadtler, conveyed appreciation to Norfolk Southern for collaborating with the state on this endeavor. Stadtler also expressed optimism about finalizing the agreement, stating that it will broaden the availability of passenger rail services for Virginians, offering them a viable transportation option to consider.
